DEFINE THE PURPOSE
Start by identifying why you need the loan and whether borrowing is the most appropriate option. Consider the amount required, the expected benefit and whether the proposed expenditure can be delayed, reduced or funded through another suitable arrangement.
CHECK AFFORDABILITY
Review your regular income and essential expenses. Include existing loan repayments and other commitments when estimating what you can reasonably afford.
Do not calculate affordability using income alone. Your budget must also account for food, housing, transport, education, dependants and other unavoidable responsibilities.
UNDERSTAND THE FULL TERMS
Before accepting an offer, ask for the applicable interest rate, method of interest calculation, fees, insurance requirements where applicable, repayment frequency, total repayment amount and consequences of late payment.
Confirm whether the interest is calculated on a reducing balance or another basis. A rate cannot be meaningfully compared with another offer unless the calculation method and related charges are understood.
CHECK ELIGIBILITY AND DOCUMENTATION
Loan products may have different eligibility rules, documentation requirements, guarantor arrangements and repayment periods. Request the current official requirements for the specific product you are considering.
Do not rely on an old checklist or assume that the requirements for one loan product apply to another.
PLAN FOR REPAYMENT
Consider how repayments will be made if your income changes or an unexpected expense arises. Avoid committing your entire available monthly surplus to debt repayments.
If you already have a loan, review your current repayment schedule before taking on another obligation.
ASK FOR CLARIFICATION
EPZA SACCO members should confirm all current loan terms, rates, charges, eligibility requirements and application procedures directly through authorized SACCO channels.
Borrowing responsibly begins with a clear purpose, a realistic repayment plan and a complete understanding of the agreement before signing.
